The RAICES Lab studies how ethnic-racial socialization and family, cultural, and community processes support resilience, identity, and well-being among youth. We use a range of methods, including quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews, and observational approaches, to examine how young people navigate stressful life experiences and thrive. Our research also explores how these processes unfold across developmental stages and within diverse cultural contexts.

The Role of Grandparents in Ethnic-Racial Socialization

This study explores how grandparents living in multigenerational homes help teach their teenage grandchildren about race, cultural identity, and navigating discrimination. While most research looks at how parents handle these conversations, this project highlights the vital, unique role grandparents play in building their grandchildren’s resilience, self-esteem, and family connectedness. Through interviews with grandparents, we aim to better understand how extended family members help minority youth thrive in the face of societal challenges.
